God Made In Man's Image

January 21, 2008

It was great to see each of you guys last night!  Here are the notes for your thoughts and further study!

Blessings

God is not like:

          Santa – Donald Miller Book

o   Get what we think is the things we should have or want

o   Do certain things and get a prize, act bad and get nothing

o   Says he cares but is uninvolved (parents do all the work, Santa gets the credit)

o   Obedience for my desired result, not God’s pleasure

IRS – Auditing your life – keeping track

o   Keep everything in order and you won’t have to give to much

o   God takes away your stuff

o   If you don’t do it right a house cleaning is coming

o   Play it right and something nice might happen to ya

Punisher – acting out vengeance and punishment because of our guilt

o   Tsunami was for wicked behavior

o   God let me have it because I messed up

Crooked Trial Lawyer (religious and legalistic) – twisting truth to get a certain end result

o   This one is the one we are most guilty of

o   Shaping truths and scriptures to fit our beliefs

o   Don’t spend as much time knowing and serving God as making formulas to fit our preferences or end result desires

§  I want this, and I like that

§  Claiming God’s command on our preferences

Isaiah 55:8,9 “My ways are higher than your ways, my thoughts are higher than your thoughts”

God as he is ~ Above, beyond, untouchable, could not be known unless he showed Himself to us

Colossians 1:15  “He is the express image of the invisible God”

So the question of what God is like is answered in knowing what Jesus is like

What Jesus is like:

Loving ~ to the honest point of need, not the pretty, pleasant, acceptable norm of society

o   Jeremiah 29:11 “ I know the plans . . .”

o   Matthew 6:33 “Seek First and Then all these things shall be added”

Holy~ set apart for a purpose (I only so what my Father says do, to seek and to save the lost) but yet relational to those who needed Him and wanted to know Him

o   Leviticus 19:2, 1 Peter 1:13-21 “Be Holy because I am Holy”

o   But at the same time Luke 10:27 – Love God, Love People

Righteous ~ rightly related to His father, Himself, and those around him

What is revealed to us in scripture is God’s heart not His mind

We must be extremely cautious in remanding God to a formula or our perceptions and preferences

We know His heart and He can be trusted, but we must not presume upon how he will or won’t do things.  We need to act in faith in accordance with scripture (know the book).

The end result here is not for us to receive, but for Him to be God and for us to be His children

He loves us unconditionally and has laid it all on the line for us to be His.

BUT Remember, this is His deal, He is in control (He can be trusted),  He has the final say, it’s all about us, it is all about Him. Look at the Isaiah passage again:

8 “For my thoughts are not your thoughts,
neither are your ways my ways,”
       declares the LORD.
9 “As the heavens are higher than the earth,
so are my ways higher than your ways
and my thoughts than your thoughts.
10 As the rain and the snow
       come down from heaven,
and do not return to it
       without watering the earth
and making it bud and flourish,
so that it yields seed for the sower and bread for the eater,
11 so is my word that goes out from my mouth:
It will not return to me empty,
but will accomplish what I desire
and achieve the purpose for which I sent it.
12 You will go out in joy
       and be led forth in peace;
       the mountains and hills
will burst into song before you,
and all the trees of the field
       will clap their hands.
13 Instead of the thornbush will grow the pine tree,
and instead of briers the myrtle will grow.
This will be for the LORD’s renown,
       for an everlasting sign,
       which will not be destroyed.”

He is God, we are not – He is loving us and drawing us to Him for AMAZING THINGS.

His goal is us – Let Him do His work, he’ll do better than you

Our Goal is Him – let’s do our work of loving God and People

He is loving, He is just, He is for you, He has made a way, He is coming back

Let’s not be in the business of making God in our own image, but take the time to know and worship him.  Then we can be “conformed into the image of Christ” which is our destiny. (Romans 8:29)

Sorry I missed y’all Sunday night.

“We know His heart and He can be trusted, but we must not presume upon how he will or won’t do things. We need to act in faith in accordance with scripture (know the book).”

This is one of those things about God that fills me with wonder and amazement. Only He sees what the final picture is going to look like, but we can trust that is is GOOD!

If we want a butterfly and God gives us a caterpillar, we would welcome it because we know this ugly little critter will transform into the butterfly we wanted. So, the problems, trials, and challenges of our daily lives must be approached the same way. We can’t comprehend how or when, but we must take care of those caterpillars, with faith that God has a transformation plan. Trust Him. Love Him. He loves you.

  4. I can tell that this is not the first time you mention the topic. Why have you chosen it again?

    Ted,
Thanks for the comment, but I am not sure I understand your question. It is true that I often share and touch on similar topics. I typically share regarding things that I myself am walking through and often I discovering new aspects of things I have seen or known before.

    Thanks again for the comment.
