I Am Legend Study Notes

January 29, 2008

It was amazing to see all of you guys last night!  I am really excited about what the Lord is doing with our community!  Here are the notes from last night.  Please comment your thoughts and reflections!

I Am Legend?

If I were to ask you, “How do you see yourself?” What are some responses we would get?

·         Tired, Crazy, Young, Old

·         Unattractive, unsuccessful, Hurt, Lonely

Point 1

“The truth is, the way we are wired, we see ourselves, God (as we talked about last week), and those around us from a selfish perspective.”

·         Ever been offended and said, “I have a right!”

·         “I ought to have”, “They ought to . . .”

·         We make our decisions based primarily on the benefits or consequences on ourselves

·         “How will this benefit, alleviate, help, advance me?”

Philippians 2:21 For all seek their own, not the things which are Jesus Christ’s.

2 Timothy 3:1-2 This know also, that in the last days perilous times shall come. For men shall be lovers of their own selves, covetous, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy,

It happened to us because of deception (The Garden of Eden), We live in it today because we are born under that curse and outside the garden (without a relationship with God)

Point 2

“We are not any more valuable than anyone else”I know we really all have a deep desire to achieve, succeed, and feel important.  We, as selfish creatures, derive our importance by several things:

·         Achievement

·         Accumulation of things

·         Being over or above others

God took the time to make us ALL:

 Psalm 139:14-16,

 14 I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made;
       your works are wonderful,
       I know that full well.
15 My frame was not hidden from you
when I was made in the secret place.
When I was woven together in the depths of the earth,
16 your eyes saw my unformed body.
All the days ordained for me
       were written in your book
before one of them came to be.

Loves us ALL as we are regardless of condition:

Romans 5:8, But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us..”

He died for us ALL:2 Corinthians 5:13-15

If we are out of our mind, it is for the sake of God; if we are in our right mind, it is for you. 14For Christ’s love compels us, because we are convinced that one died for all, and therefore all died. 15And he died for all, that those who live should no longer live for themselves but for him who died for them and was raised again.”

“We are not any more valuable than anyone else”

“We are not the only people on the planet that live life, have hopes and dreams, sorrows and pain”

The Amazing thing is that God loves you as an individual and is concerned with the individual issues of your life at the same time He is the same for everyone else!

·         1 Peter 5:6  “Humble yourselves, therefore, under God’s mighty hand, that he may lift you up in due time. 7Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.” Point 3If we are going to passionate about God, know him, seek him, be a part of what he has in store,  we need to be passionate about what he is passionate about:PEOPLEJesus said His mission was to seek and save that which was lost: God’s relationship with people – familyThat mission, along with all of the joy, intimacy with God, inheritance, etc., is entrusted to each of us as we become a part of the family God not only wants to understand that we are the most important thing to Him, he wants us to treat Him as the most important thing to us AND treat others as though they are also the most important thing to Him.How do we do that?Romans 12:1-22

·         Remember we are one family (body) each with important function and value

·         Hate evil, cling to what is good

·         Be devoted to one another – Honor one another

·         Have zeal – BE EXCITED ABOUT GOD!

·         Show godliness – joy, patience, faithfulness

·         Share what you got – with needy, have hospitality

·         Live in harmony as much as possible with those around you – bless those who curse, joy with joy, mourning with mourning

·         Don’t be proud, but associate with those in lower positions than you

·         Do what’s right

·         Live at peace as much as it is possible – don’t take revenge – trust God

This is living and building what lasts forever – living only for yourself may build things here, but those things don’t last forever.  The way to be a legend is to invest in the eternal by loving God and Loving People.

Mark 9:35

Sitting down, Jesus called the Twelve and said, “If anyone wants to be first, he must be the very last, and the servant of all.”
