Two weeks before super bowl, talked about perspectives
– Proper perspective of God – He is incredibly other, but He is revealed love
– Proper Perspective of Ourselves – We are worth the life of God, but we are not more valuable than anyone else

We’re going to take a few weeks and talk about responses God and how He values us.
– If we all are loved and He is the Almighty God of the Universe
– If all was given for all of us, If it’s all real
– What are some of the responses we should have.

We’re going to start with worship

So what is worship?
Romans 12:1
1Therefore, I urge you, brothers, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God—this is your spiritual[a] act of worship.

– Worship is an offering
– Worship is a sacrifice
– It is in response to God (In view of God’s mercy)

The Bible itself doesn’t give a specific definition to the word worship.
Word is Old English and comes from
– Worth – Value
– Ship – Quality or Shape
– Meaning having the Shape or quality of great worth

This is a purpose for which we are called: “You are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people belonging to God, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light” (1 Peter 2:9). We were called for the purpose of praising God, worshiping God. That is one of the privileges of a Christian. We should declare that God is worthy, worth more than everything else put together.

So it is what we are (worshippers), what we are to do, and it is a result of what God has done for us.

There are two major categories of worship expressions in scripture
– Physical Responses – Bowing, kneeling, singing, laying face down
– Service Responses – Making a sacrifice and/or carrying out His instructions

Most importantly it is an attitude of the heart produced out of relationship with God
It’s not just about singing songs and attending a service – it’s something deeper
Isaiah is even stronger – (God) saying, in effect, “I’m sick of your sacrifices. I’m sick of your sabbaths and holy days.” Here is Isaiah 1:11-17: “I have no pleasure in the blood of bulls and lambs and goats…. Stop bringing meaningless offerings! Your incense is detestable to me. New Moons, Sabbaths and convocations – I cannot bear your evil assemblies. Your New Moon festivals and your appointed feasts my soul hates…. When you spread out your hands in prayer, I will hide my eyes from you; even if you offer many prayers, I will not listen.” The people were doing rituals, bringing animals, keeping Sabbaths and festivals, even praying, but despite all that, there was something seriously lacking in their worship.
Why didn’t God like their worship? He does not say they were keeping the wrong days or doing the rituals incorrectly. The problem was that their lives were full of sin. So Isaiah counsels: “Your hands are full of blood; wash and make yourselves clean…. Stop doing wrong, learn to do right! Seek justice, encourage the oppressed. Defend the cause of the fatherless, plead the case of the widow.”

– “Freely you have received, freely give”
– John 4:23,24 – Worship in Spirit and Truth
– We worship because we know Him and what He has done

The effects

Psalm 22:3 – God inhabits (enthroned) on the praises of His people
– He is among us! God is here, right here – breath it in
o Not just when we sing
o But when we live it, say it, in daily situations

Psalm 21:6 and Acts 2:28 – The is joy to the full in His presence
– And that joy is our strength – Nehemiah 8:10

Luke 4:17-19
– He is now with us and in us as we believe
– His hand is upon us
o We will be empowered
o We will see God do life transforming things

James 4:8
– It brings us close, it allows us to “touch” God

There is something incredibly freeing in worship, we need to stretch, there is more, we can never go deeper than God can meet us. And if there’s always more I want it. I want to be close, I want to hear His heartbeat.
I want to live a life that shows Him my love and devotion because he has loved us so and is more committed to me than I will ever be to Him.

What an awesome night that was at Ethos! I am honored to finally play music for God. It is an awesome feeling ! We have to remember that God gives us talent to be used for his glory and not ours. I forgot that a long time ago and paid the price for it. Thank you God for letting me do this again.
