Letters From Prison – Ephesians

April 14, 2008

God uses circumstances!

Ephesians

Paul is in prison in Rome for preaching the Gospel

He is in chains, but spends his time in this letter describing how good it is to be God’s!

Even when Paul asks for prayer he doesn’t ask for his circumstances to change – He asks to preach even for fearlessly:

Ephesians 5:19,20 – “19Pray also for me, that whenever I open my mouth, words may be given me so that I will fearlessly make known the mystery of the gospel, 20for which I am an ambassador in chains. Pray that I may declare it fearlessly, as I should.”

Here’s the deal:

To be able to see God’s goodness no matter where you are or what circumstances you are in – you got to make sure what you believe is on the mark.

What you believe will control your behavior

What was going on in Ephesus?

·         Letter written about 60-62 AD while Paul is in prison in Rome

·         Ephesus was one of the major centers in the Roman Empire

·         Paul started the church there

·         Christianity was the minor religion

·         Paul is laying out the most important things here so that the Church can stand firm and live as the community is was designed to be

1.      It is by, for, and through Christ that we have come to believe, live, and have relationship with Him

a.      1:3-14 – look at all of the His, He, and Hims

2.      Paul is excited that God has used him (even his sufferings) vs.3:13 to share the truth with those who needed it, the ones he was sent to.

3.      Prays for them to have what he understands will carry them in life (high times and low times) 3:13-21

4.      Vs. 5:1,2 – Imitate Christ and live a life of love (that is sacrifice) – that is our joy!

5.      Hebrews 12:2 – “Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy set before him endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.”

It is our joy in all circumstances that we belong to God, to live like Him, and to know that He understands

Even when the world (and even us) would say it’s not all good – we know that God has the final word!

We are blessed that we are His and that our lives can touch others

Thanks for that message Scott. I know you had it planned in advance, but after the week I had, this message came at the perfect time for me.

As I thought more about Mike McAtee (which puts my problems in perspective), God’s power to provide the miraculous is obvious here because all other explanations were removed. So, now I ponder … Why is it that only in the absence of all other explanations we attribute the miraculous to God?? Or put another way … Are we missing God’s little miracles everyday because we explain them away ??
