Perk Up Mister – Notes

April 24, 2008

Sorry this is late gang!  It’s been a crazy week!  Here are this past weeks notes:

Remember a time when you were really unhappy?

·         Like when you got socks for Christmas

What took place for me and you is that our circumstances didn’t meet our expectations.  We became unhappy because of the happenings.

But what about joy?

We’re going to talk about that for a bit.

James 1:2,3  Consider it pure joy, my brothers, whenever you face trials of many kinds, 3because you know that the testing of your faith develops perseverance.”

It is not our nature to consider things a joy when they are a pain or more overly, painful.

How can this work?  We’re not wired this way!

It comes from knowledge.   It comes from having this Jesus things settled in your heart!

Paul gives us a pattern to true joy in this letter.  Remember, he is in prison, he is in chains, and he’s been beat for what he believes.

He’s writing this letter to the people of Philippi. This is a special church, which he planted.  It was started when he and Silas were in jail there and they we’re set free while they were worshipping by an earthquake.  The jailer and his whole house come to faith in Christ.  That began the church.  This church had given money to support Paul’s ministry on a couple of occasions.

He doesn’t want them to become discouraged.  He wants them to understand what true joy is and how to live it out.

1.       Joy is in God – He is Near Phil. 4:4-5

a.       Not in circumstances.  It is a state that is based upon the worth of knowing Christ not having stuff or circumstances.  (Akin to people giving their lives for love of country or a person that they love)

b.      God is with you at all times and you have the promise of being with Him forever

2.       So Don’t worry about anything, but with thanks make your request known to God and the peace that surpasses understanding will guard your heart in Jesus Phil 4:6-7

3.       Because you have this relationship, don’t worry about the circumstances (do plan though).  Just be thankful that he loves and will take care of you and ask Him about your needs.  Then you will be at peace – your heart will be bold and strong.

4.       If you believe God is who he says He is and you are His, then dwell on (think about) good things.  Live a life of love, community, and service (what Paul taught). Phil 4:8-9

a.       Because we are lavishing in this relationship with Him then get off of the negative!  Quit complaining and fussing (which roots in a selfish need for what I want)

b.      Look for the good, celebrate God in all circumstances

c.       Live by loving, relating, and serving.

                                                               i.      Cast ethos vision statement

1.       “engaging popular culture with the love of Christ and learning to live the life of faith”

Key Passage

3:7-9 “But whatever gain I had, I counted as loss for the sake of Christ. Indeed, I count everything as loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For his sake I have suffered the loss of all things and count them as rubbish, in order that I may gain Christ and be found in him, not having a righteousness of my own that comes from the law, but that which comes through faith in Christ, the righteousness from God that depends on faith” (ESV)

It’s because, by, for, and all about the “sake of Christ”
