The Grand Mystery of Simple

November 25, 2008

When I was chaperoning an 8th Grade trip to DC one time the Lord spoke to me in a very transformational way.  We were standing on the Capital Building steps looking down the grassy Mall towards the Washington Monument (Over a mile away).  We were holding our hands up, closing one eye, and “squishing” the monument between our fingers.  We could hold the whole thing in our hands.  We then embarked on the long walk down the Mall to the monument.  The closer we got the harder it was to get the monument between our fingers until we were so close it was to big to even see the whole thing without looking up.  Once we arrived at the Monument, we leaned against the monument, stretched our arms out, and looked up.  We were so close to it that we couldn’t see the top or get our arms around it.  God spoke.

That’s how we grow in our journey with God.  When we start out or at certain points in our journey, we have it all figured out.  We know exactly how God does things and what He thinks.  We’ve got the formula.  But as we grow, the closer we get, the more we realize God is vastly more than we ever thought.  As we get to the point that we really can begin touch Him, He is too big to be figured out or comprehended.  But we can simply touch Him and be touched by Him.

I believe firmly in a phrase, “Love God and Love People”.  It defines my life.  I also believe that this is what Jesus was helping us with in Luke 10:27.  Since no one knows the mind of God, since His ways are higher than our ways (Isa. 55:8,9), God sent Jesus to give us a visual (John 3:16-17).  Jesus knew that it was to big for us (“none are righteous, no not one”), so He died so we could gain it (John 3:16) and He tells us that the whole thing is summed up in this (Luke 10:27), “Love the Lord your God with all of your heart, all of your soul, with all of your mind, and all of your strength and . . . Love your neighbor as yourself.”  Simple.  Simple Faith, Simple Love, Simple Service.  I’m not saying it’s not deep, I’m not saying it’s easy, I’m saying it’s not complicated.

Love God, Love People and God will change the world.
