The Proverbial Journey 7

March 7, 2010

Proverbs Chapter 7

Take a look back at my post on Chapter 5 because it directly correlates with Chapter 7.

Chapter 5’s focus was on a warning against the act of adultery, Chapter 7 is about the object of adultery.  The root issue here is when we seek satisfaction in things that are outside of God’s design.  The face value warning here is about sexual immorality and infidelity and the demise it will cause in your life (Vs. 26,27 are plain about the end of that road).  However, I want to take a look at the first three verses and look at a broader scope through the words of a children’s song.

“O be careful little eyes what you see, O Be careful little eyes what you see, There’s a Father up above, And He’s looking down in love, So be careful little eyes what you see.”

“Be careful little ears what you hear . . . Be careful little hands what you do . . . Be careful little feet where you go . . .Be careful little mouth what you say”

Vs. 1-3

1 My son, keep my words
and store up my commands within you.

2 Keep my commands and you will live;
guard my teachings as the apple of your eye.

3 Bind them on your fingers;
write them on the tablet of your heart.

These three verses give us great insight in to avoiding the snares of things that seek to become ungodly objects of desire.

Vs. 1 – Keep God’s word – study it, know it.  This is about what you choose to do with your mind.  Think on Godly things, meditate on His word

Vs. 2 – “Be careful little feet where you go . . .” Keep God’s commands, walk it out.  Also, Guard your heart.  Be careful about your affections, the things that you allow capture your heart.  “Be careful little eyes what you see . . .” We need to choose to see the world from a Godly perspective.  That is a choice.  You have to choose to pick grace over retaliation or selflessness over selfishness.  Use God’s word as your looking glass.

Vs. 3 – ‘Be careful little hands what you do . . .” Allow God’s word to determine the things you decide to touch and do.  “Write them (God’s Commands) on the tablet of your heart” – What you do with your hands (work, entertainment, pleasure, etc.) influences your heart’s beliefs and desires.  So allow God’s word to guide what you do and your heart will desire more Godly things to do.

What are those things that entice you away from God’s heart?  What have you been giving your Eyes, Hands, Feet, Mind, and Heart to? What are your thoughts?
