Proverbs Chapter 27

Compliments and Praise

21 The crucible for silver and the furnace for gold,
but man is tested by the praise he receives.

How many of you watch or have seen American Idol in the beginning of the season?  This is the time when they audition singers and there are always some very silly often funny people who cannot sing.  More often than not you will hear the phrase, “People tell me I’m really good.” or “My mother said I have a great voice and ought to try out.”  Well meaning people often tell us what they think we want to hear or they are dishonest with us because they are afraid to tell us the truth in love.

We must submit the praises we hear to the Lord.  We also need to check some of those things with people who love God, love us, and will be honest with us.  We all struggle with identity and want to feel valued.  The danger is that we can get trapped into fishing for praises that make us feel good and lead us rely on ourselves.  Relying on ourselves will lead us to sin, failure, and pain.  The scriptures tell us that “every good and perfect gift comes down from the Father of Heavenly Lights.” They are His to be used for Him.  When the “test” comes, people give us praise, thank them and then submit and point it to Jesus.

________

Stewardship and Judgement

23 Be sure you know the condition of your flocks,
give careful attention to your herds;

24 for riches do not endure forever,
and a crown is not secure for all generations.

We are to pay attention to the things the Lord has placed in our care.  We can squander and misuse the things He has given us to care for.  Our money, time, gifts, talents, etc.  are not a guarantee.  We must be wise with these things because they can yield a return, growth, inheritance to our children, and impact for the Kingdom.  When we are unwise with these things we can miss out on God’s blessings and we will give an account for what we were given.  See the parable of the talents in Matthew 25:14-28 and also the believers judgement in I Corinthians 3:9-15.

What are your thoughts on these two things?  What other passages stood out to you guys today?
