Nothing We Could Do Propels Us To Do

February 2, 2011

Here is a powerful quote by Martin Luther mentioned by Timothy Keller in the forward to “Bonhoeffer: Pastor, Martyr, Prophet, Spy” by Eric Metaxas.

Luther so persistently expounded, “We are saved by faith alone, not by faith which is alone.”  That is, we are saved, not by anything we do, but by grace.  Yet if we have truly understood and believed the gospel,it will change what we do and how we live.

There is nothing we could do to earn our salvation.  It is a free gift from God to all who confess and believe.  However, we have in our society cheapened that grace at times in our behavior.  We do find many in our churches (myself being one at times) who profess Christ but live no differently before we met Him save for church attendance and vocabulary.  If we have seen Him, if we have encountered Him, if we have truly embraced this Gospel, it should be working a radical transformation in the way we live.  As Paul tells Timothy, “… in speech, love, life and purity.”
